HEALTH CAREERS

Introduction to Health Science Careers (Gr. 11) 1st semester                                                  9286

This is an exploratory course designed to provide students with an opportunity to investigate all aspects of the health science industry.  Students will receive an introduction to healthcare systems and examine a variety of pathways in health science, and reflect on their own knowledge, skills and interests, to begin to narrow the areas within health science they want to continue exploring, in preparation for further study in Health Science I.  (5272)

             Note: Students are encouraged to move on to Health Science Education I during senior year

 

Medical Terminology (Gr. 11) 2nd semester                                                                              9276

This prepares students with language skills necessary for effective, independent use of health and medical reference materials.  It includes the study of health and medical abbreviations, symbols, and Greek and Latin word part

meanings taught within the context of body systems. This course builds skills in pronouncing, spelling, and defining

new words encountered in verbal and written information.  Students acquire skills in interpreting medical records and communications accurately and logically. Emphasis is on forming a foundation for a medical vocabulary including meaning, spelling, and pronunciation. Medical abbreviations, signs, and symbols are included.  (5274)

Note: Dual Credit option with Ball State University NUR101 – 2 credits

Health Science Education I: Health Careers (Gr. 12)  1st semester  (2 credits)           9221 / 9231

Course content includes skills common to specific health career topics such as patient nursing care, dental care, animal care, medical laboratory, public health, an introduction to health care systems, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. Lab experiences are organized and planned around the activities associated with the student's career objectives. Job seeking and job maintenance skills, personal management skills, self-analysis to aid in career selection and completion of the application process for admission into a post-secondary program of their choice are also included. Prerequisite: Carroll Community Link Application & Interview to be accepted into program

Note: Student will submit volunteer application to Lutheran & Parkview Hospitals upon acceptance into

                                program.

 

Health Science Education I: Health Careers (Gr. 12)  2nd semester  (2 credits)         9222 / 9232

This is an extended laboratory experience at the student's choice of clinical site designed to provide the opportunity to assume the role of nurse assistant and practice technical skills previously learned in the classroom, including information on the health care system and employment opportunities at a variety of entry levels, an overview of the health care delivery systems, and health care teams and legal and ethical considerations. This course also provides the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to make the transition from school to work in the field of nurse assisting, including self-analysis to aid in career selection, job seeking and job maintenance skills, personal management skills, and completion of the application process for admission into a post-secondary program. Prerequisite: Health Science Education I: Health Careers, 1st sem

Seniors in the Health Science Education I program go to six internship sites with each being a five week rotation (3 internships each semester).  During the 1st semester, students do a five week internship at Parkview.  Students then must find 2 other five week internships on their own.  During the 2nd semester, students do a five week internship at Lutheran.  Students must find 2 other five week internships on their own.
