WORK-BASED LEARNING COOPERATIVE

Students receive 3 elective credits each semester, for a total of 6 credits for the year.  (Students receive 1 elective credit each semester for the ICE Related Instruction portion and 2 elective credits each semester for the ICE On-The-Job Training portion.)

 

ICE Related Instruction (Gr. 12) 1 period each semester                                                    5421/5422

ICE Related Instruction is classroom based. It is organized and planned around the activities associated with the student’s individual job and career objectives in a career cluster pathway, and is taught the same semester as the student is receiving on–the-job training.  For a student to become occupationally competent and therefore employable, the related instruction covers (a) general occupational competencies, (b) specific occupational competencies, and (c) specific job competencies.  (5902)

ICE Related Instruction includes:  Personal Grooming and Appearance, Researching Careers, Finding and Applying  

for a Job, You, Your Employer and Co-workers, Personal Safety, Communication Skills, Leadership, Managing Money,

Banking Services, Using Credit, Handling Legal Matters, Taxes and Education.

ICE On-the-Job Training (Gr. 12) 2 periods each semester                                                5431/5432

This is actual work experience in an occupation in any one of the Indiana College and Career Pathways that relates directly to the student’s career objectives.  On-the-job, the student applies the concepts, skills, and attitudes learned during ICE Related Instruction, as well as the skills and knowledge that have been learned in other courses.  The Coordinator can assist students in securing a job.  However, the primary responsibility for securing employment rests with the student.  Loss of the job can result in the loss of credit and failing the course. To be eligible to be in the ICE On-the-job Training program students must:

  • be legally paid

  • work an average of 15 hours a week

  • have good academic standing

  • be supervised while on the job

  • obtain a work permit if under the age of 18            

Prerequisite: Instructor approval, strong attendance record, completed application, and positive teacher recommendations from job related department(s), and provide own transportation.

Note: Students in a Work Based Learning/Cooperative placement must be paid in accordance with federal and state student employment and cooperative education laws

Note: Students must work at least 270 total hours per semester

Note: Students are required to join the Career and Technical Student Organization, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and pay national and state dues (currently $10.00)

Note: Student is expected to stay at approved work location for the entire school year

Note: Site must be approved by coordinator and can be unapproved at any time for the following reasons:safety concerns, student objectiveness, appropriateness, and any other concerns. 

 

 

Work Based Learning Capstone/Internship (Gr. 12) 1 or 2 semesters              1 period 5491/5492

This course builds students’ skills and knowledge in their chosen career paths or furthers their study within the area of interest.  A standards based training plan will be developed by the student, teacher, and workplace mentor to guide the student’s work based learning experiences and assist in evaluating achievement and performance. Students apply the concepts, skills, and dispositions learned in previous coursework in their pathways in real world business and industry settings.  The instructor evaluates and assigns the student’s grade.  The instructor can assist students in securing the internship; however, the primary responsibility for securing the internship rests with the student.  (5974)

Prerequisite: Instructor approval, strong attendance record, solid academic standing, completed application, positive teacher recommendations from job related department(s), and provide own transportation

            Note: One or more credits earned depending on the duration and length within the school day (For 1 credit,

                               the student must intern 5 hours a week.  For 2 credits, the student must intern 10 hours a week.)

            Note: Students are required to join the Career and Technical Student Organization, Future Business

                               Leaders of America (FBLA) and pay national and state dues (currently $10.00)

Course Credits Earned

  • Students can earn up to two credits per semester or four credits for entire year

  • This course can be taken for either one or two semesters

  • To earn one credit, students must obtain 85 hours of internship experience throughout the semester.  To earn two credits students must obtain 170 hours.  (Students must designate what option they would like, when signing up for classes)

  • Based on the student’s schedule, the student will be able to leave after 4th, 5th or 6th period.

 

 

 *Loss of internship, not meeting internship hour requirements, or breaking program rules and/or regulations may   

 result in the loss of credit and failing the course.
