This course introduces the fundamentals of art and a variety of media and techniques. The areas of graphite drawing, colored pencil drawing, watercolor, acrylics, mixed media, design, elements and principles of design, still life, and more may be covered. Students are introduced to a variety of three-dimensional media and techniques. The areas of ceramics, relief sculpture, subtractive and additive sculpture, and more may be covered. Students become familiar with the tools and techniques of 3-D work while creating works of art. (4002)
Digital Design 1 (Gr. 9-12) 1 semester 1226
Digital Design I introduces the art and concepts of graphic design and digital illustration. Students learn basic concepts of graphic design, producing identity packages, and posters. Students also learn the art of digital illustration producing illustrative images using the Adobe Creative Suite. Students create illustrations for posters, books, and advertising. Students create graphics and layouts for some school events and activities. (4082)
Digital Design 2 (Gr. 9-12) 1 semester 1326
This course is an advanced design class. Students continue the study of graphic design but move to focus more heavily on personal styles and techniques. The class builds on skills from Digital Design 1 and builds in complexity. The course utilizes the programs Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop and will introduce Adobe InDesign. Emphasis is on personal vision, original design, and application beyond the classroom. (4082)

This is an advanced design class. Students focus heavily on personal vision within projects that are real world based such as package design, digital illustration and client projects. Web Design (Gr. 10-12) 1 semester 1436
This beginning level course introduces students to the field of web design and web page building. Students will learn web site construction through cycles of instruction in the visual aspect of web site design and the coding or building of the site. The course introduces and utilizes the programs Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to design the page and HTML and Javascript to code the page. The end result will be original, working web pages that are highly creative, functional, purposeful and user friendly. (4574)
AP Studio Art (Digital Design Focus) (Gr. 12) 2 semesters 1381/1382
This course is for students with a strong interest in Graphic Design, Illustration and the Digital Arts. The high amount of artwork and requirement of exceptional quality of work to meet the College Board requirements for the visual art portfolio will be a challenge. All work must be finished, matted, or mounted in three separate portfolios. It is intended for the highly motivated student who is seriously interested in the study of art. All students are required to create and build a personal art show exhibiting their work during the spring Fine Arts Night and are responsible for all supplies over the assessed class fee. (4050)

Drawing 1 (Gr. 9-12) 1 semester 1036
This is for the serious art student with an aptitude for drawing. The focus is on artistic observations, techniques in graphite, colored pencil, pastel, charcoal, and ink. Assignments may include portraits, figure drawing and still life. This course is an important step for students considering additional art courses. (4060)
Drawing 2 (Gr. 10-12) 1 semester 1046
This advanced course is an extension of Drawing 1 and expands upon many of the skills and techniques that were learned in Drawing 1. Students are challenged with advanced technique work, compositional rules, the elements and principles of design and creative problem solving. Drawing 3 (Gr. 10-12) 1 semester 1096
This advanced drawing course is an extension of Drawing 1 and 2 and challenges students in all aspects of their drawing abilities. Expectations include creativity, works based on themes, and putting voice to their work all while executing exemplary technique. This course is similar to a college level course and is a good stepping stone for the student thinking about a career in the visual arts. (4060)

Visual Communication- Visual Storytelling (Gr. 10-12) 1 semester 1876
This class is for the student interested in drawing, cartooning, animation and illustration. Students will build upon the techniques and theories learned in Drawing 1 and Drawing 2 and apply them to different drawing materials. Students will learn the basics of cartooning, illustration, animation and digital media, and apply their drawing skills to create skilled works with individual voices. The class is meant to give meaningful skills in commercial art categories like illustration and animation, thus the name Visual Storytelling. Students will create imagery using drawing skills as well as graphic design, typography, illustration, and image creation with digital tools and computer technology. (4086)

This course introduces students to the basic 35mm film camera, shooting pictures, and the developing and printing of black and white photographs in the darkroom. Students gain a basic understanding of how design and composition helps the photographer produce creative and artistic photographs with visual expression. Students also learn how to record photographic ideas into a sketchbook. (4062)

Photography 3 (Gr. 10-12) 1 semester 1256
This course is for the advanced photography student who wishes to learn an experimental approach to photography as an art form. Students learn to make cyanotypes, experiment with Holga cameras, anthotypes, platinum palladium, etc. Students shoot approximately half of the assignments with film, and half of the assignments with digital. The primary focus is to create meaningful images that have a voice. (4062)

Photography 4 (Gr. 10-12) 1 semester 1266
This is for the student who wishes to develop his own style in photography. Students choose a theme each quarter and develop a series of photographs. Students utilize all information learned in Photo 1, 2, and 3. This class is for students who are independent thinkers. This gives the advanced student an opportunity to explore in depth an area of photography that interests them. Students must have a serious approach to producing and creating quality works of art. Portfolio development is also covered and encouraged for those students seeking a college major and career in art. Students work independently under contract and are responsible for most supplies. This course follows College Board Entrance Examination guidelines for creating a portfolio for advanced college placement. The College Board requirements for the visual art portfolio are demanding in the amount of required artwork and the quality must be exceptional. All work must be finished, matted, or mounted in the portfolio. AP Studio Art is for the highly motivated student who is seriously interested in the study of art. AP Studio Art students are responsible for all supplies over the $120 assessed class fee. All students create and build a personal art show exhibiting their work during our spring Fine Arts Night as their final exam. (4050)

Art History (Gr. 10-12) 1 semester 1126
This overview of art history takes students chronologically through time and introduces various artists and their work. Students learn how art relates to life from cave paintings to the present. Art History expands student knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity in the area of art. Students engage in sequential learning experiences that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and productions. Additionally, students study works of art and artifacts including those produced by men and women of multiple cultural groups. (4024)

This course is designed to provide an understanding and knowledge of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within diverse historical and cultural contexts. Students examine major art forms of artistic expression from past to present from a variety of cultures. Participation in class discussions to speak about art with intelligence and sensitivity is a requirement of the class. (4025)

Ceramics 1 (Gr. 10-12) 1 semester 1116
The emphasis is learning to throw ceramic forms on the wheel. Students learn to throw vases, bowls, and many different types of traditional forms. Students also create non-thrown pieces using traditional construction methods. Each student leaves this class with a greater understanding of the many ceramic processes, as well as, many beautifully glazed forms to take home. This is designed to provide creative experiences and extended knowledge of clay bodies, glazes, and techniques of working with ceramics. Hand building and wheel thrown techniques are emphasized. Ceramics 4 (Gr. 11-12) 1 semester 1176
This is for students who wish to develop their own styles and are considering pursuing this field after high school. Students create a theme as a basis for all of their work and create throws based on professional standards. Students will work with oil, watercolor and acrylics to create a variety of paintings. Students focus on their painting medium of choice. Students have the opportunity to choose what they paint and enrich their painting skills in watercolor, oil, or acrylic.
